Dear Prime Minister,
I write in support of an ambitious target of at least 75 percent emission reduction by 2035 provided Australia has the policies in place to achieve this.
It is strongly in Australia’s interest for the world to get to net zero in time to avoid large temperature increases above 1.5 degrees. To achieve this means net zero no later than 2050 and a steady downward path to that. If the world goes slow from where we are now it will need to reach net zero earlier.
We believe that a 75 percent reduction by 2035 is a sound objective as Australia’s share of the required global effort.
But we also believe that stronger and more broadly based policies than we have now are needed for Australia to achieve minus 75 percent by 2035.
