Watch—Australia-Indonesia and the region in achieving net zero emissions

Both Australia and Indonesia share high climate risk and outsized opportunity in a zero-carbon economy

Keynote address at the Indonesia Update 2025, Australian National University, on 13 September, 2025

On Monday 13 September, Ross delivered the keynote address to the Indonesia Update conference, Navigating Climate Change in Indonesia, hosted by the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy.

In his address, Ross sets the transition in a long-term development frame, arguing that Australia and Indonesia share both high climate risk and outsized opportunity in a zero-carbon economy – provided they accelerate credible policy (including carbon pricing), keep trade open in clean-industry goods, and cooperate regionally on infrastructure like an Indonesian inter-island grid.
