Changlong Wang
ARC Early Career Industry Fellow, Monash University
Dr Changlong Wang is a clean energy researcher specialising in hydrogen, green iron and steel, industrial decarbonisation, and energy systems. He is an Australian Research Council Early Career Industry Fellow at Monash University, a Climate Futures Fellow at the University of Melbourne, and an Academic Visitor at the University of Oxford.
Chang played a key role in developing the Hydrogen and Green Steel Economic Fairways Mapper, a joint initiative of Geoscience Australia and Monash University that supported the implementation of Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy. The project team received the 2023 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Innovative Research in Sustainability and was a finalist in the innovation category of the 2024 Australian Financial Review Energy Awards.
Chang represents Australia in several International Energy Agency Hydrogen Technology Collaboration Programme initiatives. He leads Task 52, Hydrogen for Iron and Steelmaking, which brings together participants from 60 organisations across 17 countries. He also led the South Australian Green Iron Supply Chain Study with the Port of Rotterdam for the South Australian Government and is a deputy work package lead for the RACE for 2030 Strategic Electric Vehicle Integration project, examining the effects of electric vehicle charging on grid stability.
His work contributes directly to public policy and industry development. Chang has led seven institutional submissions to Australian Government consultations, including reviews concerning green metals, the Guarantee of Origin scheme and the National Hydrogen Strategy. He is a member of the Clean Energy Council’s Hydrogen and Decarbonisation Directorate and serves on the Australian Energy Week advisory board.
His honours include the 2025 Monash University Vice-Chancellor’s Early Career Researcher of the Year Award in STEM, the 2024 Monash Engineering Dean’s Award for Research Excellence, a 2025 Engagement Australia commendation for leadership in engagement, and the 2024 DCCEEW–CSIRO International Hydrogen Fellowship.
